I was wondering if anyone knows of specific prayers to chant for someone who has trancended their body?

I am aware of the Matyuijaya Mantra, which is a Siva mantra to attain victory over death, to restore the health of someone who is suffering from physical pain or illness and for a dying person to be granted a peaceful death. Though this mantra from my understanding is to be chanted before someone transcends.

Is there any mantra to be chanted for beings after they transcend ?

My grandpa is about to transcend from his body, and I just want to offer everything I can for him during his passing and after he passes.

Blessings..

  • For anyone interested, here is the general breakdown of the Matyuijaya Mantra.

    The Matyuijaya Mantra in translation:

    OM. Tryambakam yajamahe

    Sugandhim pushti-vardhanam

    Urvarukamiva bandhanan

    Mrityor mukshiya mamritat

OM ~This sound is said to be the underlying kernel of the manifest universe and vibrates eternally at the heart of creation. It signifies all-pervading consciousness. Although it is not found in the actual text of the hymn, it is added to the body of the mantra whenever the mantra is used for meditation practice.

tryambakam~ The prefix tri (pronounced with a short "i") means "three." When it is joined to ambakam, the letter "i" becomes "y", and the word reads tryambakam. Ambaka means "eye." Trymbakam is "three-eyed," an epithet for Shiva which alludes to a well-known story in which Parvati, Shiva's wife, playfully places her hands over his eyes. In consequence, the whole universe is thrown into blinding darkness. To save the universe, which in truth exists only in his eyes, Shiva opens a third eye at the center between his eyebrows, with which he sees both within and without.

The term three-eyed signifies the deep and pure consciousness of the universe that pervades and transcends time (past, present, future); perfectly manifests the powers of will, knowledge, and action; dwells as the witness within the three states of consciousness (waking, dreaming, and sleeping); and embodies the powers of the fires of heaven (the sun, surya), skies (the moon, chandra), and earth (fire, agni). Shiva is every spiritual trinity and dwells everywhere. Some also say that the word amba found here means "mother." Shiva is manifested as the child of three mothers, the three great principles: mind, life force (prana), and matter.

yajamahe~ We worship, adore, honor, revere.

sugandhim Su ~means "good, sweet." Gandha is a fragrance. Shiva is the sweet fragrance, the joy (ananda), which permeates life.

pushti ~A well-nourished condition, thriving, prosperous, full, and complete.

vardhanam~ One who nourishes, strengthens, causes to increase (in health, wealth, well-being); who gladdens, exhilarates, and restores health; a good gardener.

urvarukam~ A cucumber-like plant that grows as a creeper in India. It produces a gourd that is attached to the vine by a strong, woody stem. The vine itself easily entangles other plants, attaching itself to them and becoming an obstacle for their growth. Thus, more generally, the word stands for disease, attachment, obstacles in life, and resulting depression.

    iva ~Like, just as.

bandhanan ~Stem (of the gourd); but more generally, unhealthy attachment.

    mrityor~ From death.

    mukshiya~ Free us, liberate us.

    ma ~Not

amritat~ Immortality, emancipation. (means to exist in full awareness in the divine source from which all-physical bodies - indeed all physical universe arise. It is a resurrection of awareness).

    Translation:

OM. We worship and adore you, O three-eyed one, O Shiva. You are sweet gladness, the fragrance of life, who nourishes us, restores our health, and causes us to thrive. As, in due time, the stem of the cucumber weakens, and the gourd if freed from the vine, so free us from attachment and death, and do not withhold immortality.

  • Bala,

What you have said is "My grandpa is about to transcend from his body, and I just want to offer everything I can for him during his passing and after he passes." As such, you have already, and will continue to give whatever blessings you can to your grand father's passing.

Your true intension will be the most powerful. The intension is the potential, the fuel.

Secondly, it is _most_ important that the Mantra you choose is one that the departed soul will be in agreement with.

Please know I'm not some person talking from some belief without experiences here. As such, I will also share a few short true experiences I've had with family members that have passed (though I've had such experiences with many, many whom I never even met while they were alive)

When my grandmother died, some days after she kept coming to visit me. At first I thought she wanted to look over us before she left. Though she kept returning and following me. She kept returning constantly. It began to feel uncomfortable. She began showing me things she wanted me to tell to other members of the family so I did. Finally one day when she was ready (it was a few weeks later) she came to me and asked me for a prayer for her. I was surprised by this, but she was almost demanding it. As if she couldn't cross over until I gave her a prayer.

So I began giving her a Mantra chant for her to go. Though she begun to get angry at me, and said she didn't believe in any of these Hindu chants. She asked me for the Christian prayer of Mother Mary as she had always had great devotion to Mother Mary.... I agreed and gave her this prayer. As I did this, her astral body turned into a small circle flash of light, then it got smaller and smaller than it flew and came into my left toes and began rising through my energy body up my knees and up through all my chakra's until it reached the small chakra above the ajna... and that was it, she was gone.

I learned a lot from this expereinced. We often forget what the departed soul is asking for, instead we try to give them what we think is helpful. Please do not forget important point. It is not about you and what mantra you think it is best sometimes.

I've had many other such experiences, though this is the closest one that would relate to something you are concerned about.

    Best Wishes,
    Ramiel

Wow, Ramiel, that's a cool story. I come from the Roman Catholic faith, but now practice Sanatana Dharma. I have never been attracted to the Divine Mother till I met my guru, and now I can finally see the power in Mother Mary's prayers. I understand my mother's love for Her too. Thanks for sharing this story, helped to deepen my own faith
      • Wow Ramiel that is a really amazing story, thank you for sharing this with us. Gosh, I do not know how i would respond if this happened to me, sounds like you really handled it well. So could you see your grandma right in front of you then? wild!!
I appreciate your perspective of this, thank you for offering your thoughts.

        • Bhakti,

I'm sorry to say that from what I discovered there is no power to Divine Mother in these situations, the power is there, but it's important to understand where it is coming from. It appears to be Divine Mother, but it is not. It is that for instance my grand mother had spent 80+ years of her life in devotion to Mother Mary, so she had given Mother Mary great power over her.

For others who have died since I have not done any mantras anymore. It goes case by case. I've had the wildest experiences, but it really depends on the departed soul.

Here's one other example. There is a soul I encountered (one I never met before) while I was trying to help his grand daughter in a totally separate issue at a work shop I was in. This old man was still stuck and not gone. I realized he was an American, he had a large farm that he loved dearly. The farm was ceased by the US Government for some reason. This is all I understood. And as he loved the farm dearly, he died having lost it. He had not crossed over and he had just this great longing for his farm. You can say his entire devotion in his life was to the land... there is no Goddess here, there is not even a God here.

What I did for him was that I energetically made myself resemble his farm so he could see it one more time. When I did this, then he laid down, closed his eyes with a smile and tears of joy running, and he was gone. This was the sweetest death I ever experienced... I experienced his death along with him. It is still the most beautiful death I've experienced.

Yet, to answer your question I was literally seeing my paternal grand mother in front of me. She was standing, in her normal cloths, though she was standing in the air. She was covered by my blue aura when I was seeing her. I think part of the reason she kept coming back to me is because of my energy. It was feeding her, and she was evolving every time she was near me. This was a very strange experience for me. It all just happened like I said, though I had not context for such an experience before. Now I realize that the whole 'path' already exists within me through the years of practice. That within me, my body exists the path to cross over as well, so I could offer that path to my family members. That was my blessing to them.

The departed souls do not have much power left. They can bother us is about all they can do usually. That goes for most people. Though I've also had a few members die who had cultivated a lot of spiritual energy. I was quite surprised when one day I woke up, went to the bathroom in the middle of the night, maybe it was 3am. As I was sitting there, all of a sudden my cat rose her head and looked over to my right side. I turned my head, and I could clearly perceive a very vibrant golden human figure. There was so much beautiful energy and grace, I thought it must have been an angel. I guess this was my first such experience, this happened quite a while ago. I bowed my head and put my hands together in the namasteh form to him and felt energy from him. The next morning my mother called me and said that my aunt's husband in Iran had just died in the hospital. So I told her my experience and told her to relay to my aunt that her she should not worry about her husband, he is a great spirit and he is definitely going to a high place.

My point in all of this is for you all to realize dying is not what you think it is. It is not a one way affair. Do not treat it much differently than you would if a living friend was sick. Find out what they are okay with. However, in general just about everyone will be okay with your good intentions and wishes for their health and safety. So that's the best I've found. Sometimes they need energy, sometimes a prayer, sometimes a land in sight.

Overall, I realize not everyone will have the same awareness that I've been lucky and unlucky to to have. However what I know for sure is that if you have the intention to help them, this is all you need, nothing else. You will then end up giving them whatever you can, in whatever way you know. For example you may help them cross over in a dream, or you may just open your hands and imagine you are giving them a blessing, and imagine that blessing to be whatever it is that they needed... give them an unconditional love blessing, and it will automatically take the form that they need.

  • I’m of the opinion that a good way to leave life, is to go out as open to our passing are we were when we came into life. This isn’t so easy for most people because of a lack of ability to surrender to the process. Some people do that well, while others do not (especially given the discomfort and drugs that many people endure). As for a mantra, I don’t know of anything off hand. If you probably know, that The Tibetan Book of the Dead has a whole ritual that follows the passing of a loved one, one that goes on for weeks, as an attempt to guide the transitioning soul through samsara and to as high a rebirth as possible. I don’t imagine that your relatives are probably up for that, most westerners aren’t (and of course honor your grandfather’s wishes and not outwardly invoke unknown rites and practices).
The point, it seems to me (and this is just my perspective, not especially informed by any particular tradition), is for the transitioning person to leave life with as high a spiritual energy as they can. This is mostly their responsibility, but since we are all connected, we can effect their state (somewhat) through our own. What comes to my mind is simply to hold an image of him as an open face, the way a new born child looks, with that same feeling yourself (colored with a feeling of love), and then find or intuit some prayer or mantra that supports that. Anything that gives that energy and creates a positive wish for that person would be good. If the Matyuijaya Mantra does that, good enough. Anyway, that's my metaphysical two cents worth. Be Love
  • Hare Krishna Maha Mantra is great, for it bestows a boon that this easily surpasses liberation (mukti) and that is Bhakti. There is nothing in this world as valueable as Bhakti. Hare Krishna Hare Krishna Krishna Krishna Hare Hare, Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare

The ShrAddha ceremony (pronounced different than ShraddhA - faith ) is held to honor/worship departed ancestors.
